Question Electronic Shift Control

I need help.
I have a 92 325i and I seem to be having some trouble with my electronic shift control. After about 15 min of driving my Indicator light for the electronic shift control comes on and my car goes into this mode. When I start to drive from a full stop you can feel the car drag itself from first gear until 2nd...and then it is ok. But the light remains on and the car is still in that mode. It's not until I shut it off for an hour or so that it goes back to normal. I have to wait for the car to cool down before it is ok. What is this? Why does this happen. Can anyone help?

I would check the fluid level. Then maybe a backflow flush and fill at a tranny shop. Next try changing the fluid and filter.

Understand that other than topping off the fluid you run the risk of making it worse by loosening years old sludge.

Yeah I was told that if you buy a high mileage automatic and don't know the service history leave the tranny fluid alone just add when needed. Because all of the cluthes and bands have worn but gathered sludge that the sludge eventually is what keeps them working.
