Display..Any Idea

My 96 328i keeps displaying a gear with an exclamation mark in the middle after about 30 minutes of continous driving. Why the sign and what can i do to change it?

It means your Automatic tranmission is in "limp" or emrgency mode. There is a problem with the tranny or a sensor.

Hopefully you can pull the error codes and get an idea of the problem.

I'm pretty sure you 96 is OBD-II. You need a OBD reader. Some autoparts stores will pull them for free.
