odometer coding plug
I have to replace my instrument pod in a 318 tourer 1996. That bit I can do, however the BMW main dealer tells me that I have to have the unit coded otherwise it will not work. Can I do this myself as the main dealer rates in the UK are bordering on the criminal!!!

You can do an instrument cluster swap, & the new one WILL work. What happens is the new cluster will illuminate a light (on speedo below the highest mph marking) that indicates the cluster is new, & thus the odometer mileage is not accurate. This is why you need a BMW tech to code your new cluster, so that light goes away.
I wouldn't feel obligated to take it to the stealership though, just find a local shop, & see if they can do it. Any place that does work on Bimmers should have the equipment to do that.

Thanks for the reply. I have found a local BMW specialist (not main dealer) who can do this for me. The main dealers over here will not give me an accurate time or price for this job, so you never know what the bill is going to until you go to collect the car. I wish i could have a licence to print money like that!!
