tapping noise in M40 engine
hi,
i am about to shell out almost £250 on parts and just need some advice before i do so. i have a 91 M40 E36 saloon and it has this ticking noise coming from the engine which seems to be getting louder as time goes by. mechanic says its tapetts and followers and camshaft, while others seem to believe it may be the exhaust manifold gaskets. other beema owners seem to think that is just the way the engine is supposed to sound. any ideas chaps? thanks E36 owner in the UK ![]() |

Lifters (tappets), followers and camshaft for sure!
If you are going to spend that much money I would look at getting the head totally reconditioned for a few bucks more. The noise is dut to worn clearences and even if you replace all of the above there is the possibility that the valve tops are also worn and could leave the same noise (though much quieter) once the cam, lifters and followers are replaced. I had the exact same noise and replaced my lifters (one totally failed and the noise was the same with one really loud knock in the middle. This quietened it alot but I still need to do the head totally in the near future! Luke.
