Every once in a while when I brake, I get a weird problem. I push the pedal down, but it feels like the pedal is hitting something (it's not) and it won't go any further until I let up and then apply the brakes again. Then everything is fine.

I haven't heard of this as a "common" problem for the 3-series.
My guess was master cylinder and I got a lot of hits on the web searching for "hard pedal brake cylinder". Also there was some trouble shooting info on the sites I found. Looks like master cylinder, check valve or vacuum are all candidates.
