E36 erratic idle when cold
My 93 325I won't idle when cold. Idle control valve seems to be hunting.
Checked the throttle position sensor and have 4k ohms Term 1 and 3 at rest, and have 1 to 4k ohms from closed to full open. Cant find any vac leaks and the boot is new. Cleaned Throttle body. Could it be MAF or Inlet air sensor? Haven't checked Idle control valve yet because it is difficult to reach. Don't want to remove intake manifold unless I have to. Car runs great when warm. It also Idles ok from cold start when outside air temp above 70F. We have had a few cool mornings here in Florida and it is just starting this problem. Any comments welcome. Thanks!

Never mind.
Cleaned idle control valve without removing it. Disconected idle control valve intake hose from bottom of throttle valve intake boot. Sprayed throttle valve cleaner into hose. Coldest morning yet and the car Idled fine.

I have the same problem on my 97 M3. Will that spray deteriorate the hose? I am going to try to get the valve out with out removing the manifold. keep you posted. Kurt.

I tried it on an old hose first. It didn't seem to hurt the rubber, but the repair didn't last very long. It's starting to hunt again. Not as bad.
The car has 250,000 miles on it so I have decided to go ahead and pull the intake manifold and the valve Saturday. I am going to replace the inlet air temperature sensor, coolant temperature sensor, fuellines, vacuum lines and fuel pressure regulator while I am in there. I need to anyway They are about the only wear items that I have not replaced.

Update,
Did the repairs. The Idle control valve was filthy. All of the sensors checked out good, but I replaced them anyway. I think you would have to be a leprachan to remove the idle control valve without first removing the fuel rail and intake manifold. I'm not a small man, and even after removing them, I skinned up my paws. But now the car runs as good as it did when I bougt it in 93.
