Douglas used to make the OEM battery and you could get it at Batteries Plus. Douglas has changed hands but I would still start at Batteries plus. The Dealer is way too expensive.

Bimmer Batteries
I purchased my 1st bimmer - a 1994 325i convertible 2 summers ago. During it's first winter of repairs, (being a nubie, I didn't disconnect the battery for the winter) the battery died. It was an interstate MTP-91. It was only a couple of years old, so under warranty, I was able to get a replacement for about $30. So I did. It has a vent, so can be connected to the vent in the trunk (this is a must-have I am told - acid in the trunk is a bad thing). It has survived one season of extreme driving and vibration, has 700 CCA, which was useful when I was fooling with all the little parts and cables (some were frayed) in the convertible top and running it up and down on the battery all day
![]() Since the battery I replaced was only a couple of years old, though, I don't really know if this is a "good" battery for this car. I am told the vibration environment in the bimmer trunk is quite high and eats batteries. I figure that if it needs replacing under warranty every few years at a price of $30, that's a good deal. ![]() I have also heard many people writing that optima red top batteries are the best - they are supposedly "dry cell" batteries and won't leak. Since there is no liquid sloshing around, people say they are very resistant to vibration. The web site says so too. I saw something on craigslist earlier that they were on sale this month something like $70 bucks off usual price. (they're expensive) It turns out these are also made by interstate - It looks like I'm plugging interstate, but it is just a coincidence. That's the extent of my bimmer battery knowledge. Hope it helps. |
