				Engine ticking

I have 1993 325 is with 136,000 mile on it. Recently I developed what sounds like a lifter ticking. The sound varies with engine rpm. I have gone through a lot of checks, nothing found. I did hear today when I was under the car that the sound appears to be coming from the oil pan area. could it be a problem with the oil pump?? My oil pressure light works fine and goes aut after about 5 seconds on cold start. | ||

I have heard claims of Rislone helping lifter tick however I would use any additives. Get a mechanics stethoscope to see if it really is from the oil pan. If so it is more likely rod knock. Also inspect the topend and the front chains with the scope. Overall lifter tick is fairly common and other than changing oil weight I would not worry about it. Dont use any straight weight though, just regular multi-viscosity oils.

Lifters really sound like they are ticking right under the valve cover. It's pretty obvious, although the sound can bounce around a bit, especially when you are under the car. If you put your ear near the valve cover, does it sound like it's coming from there? -Wayne
