I received the error code "C8 - DME control unit selftest" on my 94 318ic. I cleared the code with my Peake scan tool and the CIL has not come back on. What was the error? I have been checking all over without any solution.

I'm not sure - I haven't seen this before either. I'm thinking that either this was triggered by a power failure on the bus (dead battery), or the DME had some internal problem and ran a self-diagnostic check on itself.

Thanks Wayne. The CIE was triggered after the car sat for 2 1/2 months, winters don't agree with convertibles. I always have a original BMW trickle charger hooked up so a dead battery is not the issue. After starting the car, it ran rough for 10-15 seconds but since then it has run fine. If my DME turns out to be bad, it doesn't look to hard to get to it but if I replace it with a used one, will I need any reprogramming or will any used one (matching part number) work for a 94 318 work?
