Is there power to the dashboard and is the starter turning the engine over or not?

What kind of engine did you swap in?

Did you use the harness from the old engine?

Did the engine you swapped in have EWS?

Could be an EMS problem. Just too little info to go off of.

Jared, do you call the ECU an EMS or is this something more complicated than that?

I agree that the engine harness and ECU need to be compatible, but this car was running and now its not?

EWS is the ignition security system on 1996 and later BMW's. Basically a transponder in the key that sends a signal to the antenna ring in the steering column. If these dont match up, it will lock the ignition system on the car.

ok we took a engine and trans grom a 1996 328i and put in a 1994 325is we used the old harness and the old oil stand cause the power steering pump alt would NOT fit the 1996 oilstand housing i used the old knock sensors the car is now running and drives fine and according to the on board computer i'm getting 20 mpg in town the only thing that is not right that the gauges go dead for a second then come back on the engine does not cut out when this happends where would be the best place to start looking rider94bem

Intermittent gauges are usually a ground problem.

20MPG sounds about right for a 328i if you are putting your foot into it.

You need a wiring diagram. I'd highly suggest you get a hold of the Bentley manual for your car. This will give you starting points for diagnosing the wiring. I can't tell you where to begin.
