e36 window regulator problem

I bought a 94 325is with a broken window. I noticed that the window mechanism would only move up a couple of inches before I installed the new glass so I pulled the mechanishm out and made sure there was not glass binding anything up, it appeared to go down all the way.

I put in the glass and the same problem it would only go up about 4 inches. The motor isn't binding it just goes off. I made sure the window doesn't bind ( Im pretty sure it doesn't ). So I unclipped the bottom connection from the motor, the window went down all the way, but now it doesn't go up at all. Its all the way down now. Im not sure if I have a bad regulator, or there is something in the design with sensors, etc. I made it worse by unclipping the bottom connection, plugging it back in didn't make it go back to the way it was. Im stuck....and so is the window, all the way down...
