My son has an E21 323i at college in Missouri. He said it has started to shut off intermittently but onced allowed to cool for a while usually fires right back up.

Sounds like it could be the crankshaft sensor. It could be located at the front of engine near crankshaft pulley or in the crankcase, near the starter motor.
