Hi my missus has a 2000 BMW 316i Compact 1895cc 8V SOHC. There is a problem at start up where for the first 2 minutes there are power problems tick over is fine. Silly solution is to wait a couple of minutes before you drive off – yes this does work but it is an annoying fault. If you try to drive of earlier you get a “hot cut” – the engine almost dies. Another strange fact is she has notice that things are not so bad if you use lower octane cheap fuel. Any suggestions on what may be the root problem?

Sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem.
I would check fuel pressure, volume and quality. - Nick |

I would be looking at temperature sensors. Get hold of a Bentley manual and get the resistance vs. temperature specifications for your temperature sensors, particularly the one that goes in the water jacket (probably somewhere on the intake side of the head) and communicates with the fuel injection system.
The other thing that changes in the first two minutes of operation is the fit between the head and the intake manifold. If you have a leaking intake manifold gasket, that will tend to tighten up as the head warms. Use some diesel starter fluid (ether) or an unlit propane torch to check for vacuum leaks. |
