Exclamation interior chime malfunction- help!

I've got a 95 325i. For some reason recently, the chime that is supposed to kick in when you put the key in the ignition (as it has since I've had it) now it won't stop chiming! regardless if the key is in the ignition or not- unless the door is closed. This is most annoying. Has anyone had this problem, and what do you do to fix it- other than taking it to the dealer for $65 for them to push a button or something?

Thanks-

jsr

I'm a little unclear on this, the chime only goes out when the door is closed?

Yes, the chime only stops going off- as in the noise stops- only when the door is closed- regardless if the key is in the ignition or not- very strange- and it just started doing this after having the car almost 8 years...

Hmm...

The first thing i would do is to disconnect the battery and reconnect. This will reset the computer on your car. Usually this solves a number of little electrical glitches in the car.

If that doesnt do it, i'd start looking at fuses and relays, perhaps something is on it's way out.

I'd say that the switch that is internal to the steering column may be suspect. Try spraying som WD-40 in there (shouldn't hurt it), and also a bit on the key itself. Turn the ignition on and off repeatedly (without starting the car). This might work...
