94 BMW 325ic when filling gas

I have a 94 325ic and when I am filling the car with gas the gas pump shuts off frequently as though the tank has reached full. This happens beginning after a couple of gallons. I have to squeeze the handle of the gas pump extremely lightly to keep filling without interruption. Anyone ever run into this problem?

don't push the nozzle in all the way, and it will not shot of. I think it has to do with the air from your gas tank not being able to escape when you push the nozzle in all the way.

Bijan, Thanks for your reply. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I pull the nozzle back. I've tried pulling it out as far as possible and it still causes the pump to shut off.

It's air in the tank. The pump senses this, then automatically shuts off.

Jared, Thank you for your reply. Any ideas on limiting this? I don't remember this being a problem until recently. I've owned the car for two years. I suppose managing to fill the tank all the way would help?

Well, considering it's quite dangerous to top off your tank, I dont reccommend you do it at all.

Is this always the same pump that does this? There was one time I filled up my tank in Coalinga (yeah, I should'a known better than to stop in Coalinga! ) where the "auto shut-off" hit when I had filled my tank less than halfway. I started it up again, and it filled the tank to the top and oveflowed onto me! I wa not happy....

Thank you, Dave. This happens at any pump at different gas stations.

I've often wondered just how accurate those pumps are. I know they have guys that come by in trucks to check that you really are getting a gallon of gas when you fill up, bu tit still seems suspoect to me.
