A/T No Revers

I have a '89 325ix with an A/T. In the past few weeks I have periodically shifted into reverse with no response. I can rev. the engine but the transmission is clearly not engaged. No funny noises and ATF is clean with magnets showing no obvious metal parts. I know that their is an Alldata bulletin from 1992 that references this problem. Anybody have any suggestions or experienced this problem before? Any help greatly appreciated.

Rick

Yes, I've had this happen before, you might have a stuck power solonoid on the valve body. inside the oil pan, but thats on the expensive side. Start by throughly checking fluid levels, and linkage. Good luck

just did a little research, your gonna need to have a pro check it out, it could be as simple as a dirty filter, or as costly as a complete valve body, at this time it shows it to be serviceable as a complete unit only, you can probly go used couple 100 buck or higher.

Before you go and start replacing parts, be sure to check the obvious things on the car.

Just like the old AAMCO commercials used to say, 95% of all Auto trannys dont need a rebuild, rather just simple maintenece.

First, check that you indeed have fluid in there. Many times shifting problems can be solved just by adding fluid.

Next, check the filter make sure it's notclogged, as this can also cause a variety of shifting problems.

You may also want to check the kickdown linkage up on the throttle assembly. I know that 9 times out of 10 this is out of adjustment, and can cause the car not to shift at all.

You may also want to check for any rips of leaks in the Auto tranny cooler lines, as this can cause problems as well. In fact, I think Wayne had this same problem on his wife's 325is where the cooler lines were damaged.

Just remember Occams's Razor. "all things being equal, the simplest explanation is the most likey the correct explation"
