Didn't see any posts on this for the 318i, so hope I'm not the first to conquer the task! Father in-law down here in San Diego needs another engine rebuild (brother in-law red lines it & races). Was hoping some of you can help. Need to know where to get a engine rebuild kit, if it exists, for the car. I've rebuilt several Chebby & Dodge motors in the past (with an occasional Nissan), but it's my 1st bimmer rebuild. It's an '85 318i - was bought brand new in the fatherland by my father in-law when he was stationed there, so also need to know about keeping it smog legal. Looking to replace everything & anything. The kits I'm use to came with everything for the V8's, pistons, rods, rings, all bearings, lifters, etc. Can't seem to find that with the bimmers! Also, any locals here recommend a good machine shop? Looking to have it cleaned, magnafluxed, honed, the works (assuming the blocks good). Any help you all can pass along is deeply appreciated! Need to stay on the in-laws good side, don't u no! %^)

First off,
If you have any previous experience re-building engines, you will find the M10 motor very easy to rebuild. One thing i am curious about is that you say he bought the car in Germany, I am not sure how the car originally coped with emissions. Obviously, CA standards are tough, so you would be sorta limited as to what you could do internally. Did the car come with a catalytic converter or not? Has the car been federalized for the US? |

He "upgraded" to the cat converter some time ago. It passed smog 2 years back.
Can't answer if it has been federalized, but it is registered, insured in CA. Anyway, my search for engine work seems bleak. A few places I found (bmw mags, internet) seem to only sell complete engines, & can't point me in the right direction. I seem to be limited to going to either Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or Kragen for parts! If BMW parts dept. are anything like their competition, they severely mark up the price of parts. Now that I think of it, if I can stuff a Hemi or chebby 350 in there, that should solve *most* of my problems! %^)
