Why do I have a seperate ATF cooler on radiator?

My radiator cracked near the top hose. I ordered a new one from pelicanParts. Today I removed the old one to find that there is a seperate cooler that the ATF lines run thru, they do not plug into the side of the radiator like the Bently manual shows.

I have a 1992 325i...early production, around 11/91...

I am worried that the new radiator I just bought will have holes for the ATF lines. I bought the "L&R" brand, which is OEM brand I think. Is this going to be a problem? Can those holes be plugged somehow if they are present? Is the seperate cooler common?

Anyone who could shed any light on this issue, I'd love to hear from you...especially anyone that works at PelicanParts and could check it out for me.

thanks in advance,

- mike

Don't worry about it. Most radiators have a ATF cooler automatically built into the radiator. It's just more convienient and cheaper for companies to make one radiator that fits both manual and auto tranny cars. Since there will be no fluid running through them, (if i am correct in assuming that you have a manual transmission) you do not need to plug them up.

If you email me your order number, i can confirm if there will be a problem, but i dont think this will be an issue.

Actually, I have an auto tranny and was concerned that my new radiator would have holes in that I don't need.

Since you say they are made for both auto and manual trannys, I'd assume then that even if it does have extra ATF holes, I won't HAVE to use them...

thanx, you have email..
