What part is this

Can some one tell me exactly what part this is"Picture of Part" I thought it was the idle control valve but i think i might be wrong.
Also if my 318is was made on 11/95 will it be a M42 or a M44. I thought it was a M44 as it was made on 11/95 therefore its a 96 BMW but then i found out that the M44 came with ODB II but i think my car has ODB I because i can check my fault codes using the pedal system. I need to order some parts but now im confused.
Thanks

What part of the engine did the part come from?

Is there a part # on the part?

It looks like a vacuum regulator check valve, but it's hard to tell from that picture without more of a description.

Here is another picture of the part inside the car, it is in a vertical position so its harder to spot but i have put a blue circle around it. Two hoses connect to the part one on the top the second on the bottom. There is also an electrical connector.
"part in car"
