Actually, it's the later of the two common 1.7 motors. 1972-73 were the years it was used in 914s, possibly some late 71s as well. "W" was the earliest 1.7 used in the 914, and "EB" was the California-only 73 1.7 with low compression and low power.

The motor could still be a 2.0, as you can build any displacement Type IV motor on any Type IV crankcase. If the heads are 2.0 ones, chances are decent that the internals are 2.0 as well. But it's not a guarantee...
