The gap is normal. I did this to my 75 last year and I ran into the same question.

The gland nut literally dead stops a few mm from the top. I did run into an issue where one side came loose. I believe it may have been the safety washer wasn't bent over all the way on the top nut on the insert (in the frunk). Causing it to rotate a bit and get loose.
