Arguably, none at all. Or rather, I have known people who have argued that the factory banana muffler performed better than the Bursch, which was the widely-availble alternative at the time. (If you've been into 914s on-line for a while, you may recognize the names Brian Kumamoto and Tim Jones.)
I'm not sure, myself.
