The fuel sender for my 86 is inside a tube with tiny little holes for gasoline to get in and out. I think the idea is to dampen the fuel sloshing that the float has to react to. Anyway, the tiny holes on mine were partially plugged with sediment, which made the gauge reading often pretty inaccurate. If you pull the sender out, have a look at the little holes on the side and bottom of the tube. If I ever do this job again, I think I might run a drill bit through the holes and open them up a wee bit.
