there was another thread awhile back about critters taking up residence in/around the engine. the advice was to pull up on the heater flaps and put a tennis ball in the exhaust in order to keep them out.
as for mice/rats - peanut butter in the trap works REAL well - and yes, dog food, bird food needs to be kept airtight (as me how I know...)
