There's another posibility:
Check the gearbox support to the transversal beam above it. On my car (Cup) the gearbox support got some play, and the gearbox started moving in relation to the beam, creating a "clonk" every time the 'box was streessed, which was often (LSD in the 'box). That unwanted moving was enough to fatigue CRACK the beam in three pieces, which was pulling on the rail chassis...
So if it took 40K miles on my (hard used) car, maybe yours is seeing the end too.
