The spike protein is what the virus used to enter a cell. It is not how the virus replicates in the cell. Viruses do damage by replicating. If a thousand virus particles get into you, that doesn’t harm you. It is when they replicate to millions and billions that your body gets damaged.
Basically, the spike protein is the lockpick and the rest of the virus is the burglar. Without the burglar, the pick doesn’t harm.
