Photos from civilians can't be used as evidence in court, but the police can sure use it to identify individuals, and know who to investigate. They have to have a chain of custody of any evidence, and when a non cop hands over images of videos it is just a clue.
Trail cams and video cameras would be good to have. Not that much expense, and peace of mind. And maybe put a few video cameras in plan sight, and a sign that video cameras are in use. Label the camera #14 or some other high number even if if you have just one.
My DVR system captured some kids opening the unlocked door on a car of some people that came to visit my neighbors across the street. One of the kids had a very distinct limp or an unusual gait. The police looked at it, and said yep, we know who that is, and we will keep an eye out for him. My neighbor has a real inside, as he works as an attorney for the state AG's office.
