In either case it was painted over in body color, which could still be done if the undercoat is in good condition. The 72's were all black underneath, starting 73 body color.

The original undercoating is NLA. The chip guard available now comes in white,black,gray it’s made by UPOL called gravitex they also supply to wurth. There are a couple other ones out there I think 3m has one but I’m not familiar with it.
