Black underbody coating good or bad?

Entire underbody on 73S is coated black. Is this normal? Could it be 'hiding' rust?

Is it Cosmoline RP-342?
A good dry ice blasting/cleaning will take all that undercoating off and more exposing the rust underneath.
Why do you want to take it off? Is the car going to be stored in a temperature/humidity controlled environment and never driven?
How will you stop it from rusting if you expose the underbody metal and remove all the rust inhibitors? Spray something else on it?

Car is a driver. It would ultimately get another undercoating. Just surprised Scott's Independent would have a third party just blast the entire underside in black.

The original Wurth undercoating was gray, I think they discontinued the gray and only supply black now.
In either case it was painted over in body color, which could still be done if the undercoat is in good condition. The 72's were all black underneath, starting 73 body color.

It should not be a thick undercoating

Umm. Slightly odd. I think the owner meant well and got a good/expensive underseal job done. But "not correct to the breed."

The engine shouldn't be black. It would trap the heat in.

The original undercoating is NLA. The chip guard available now comes in white, black, gray it’s made by UPOL called gravitex they also supply to wurth. There are a couple other ones out there I think 3m has one but I’m not familiar with it.

Technically, I believe it ended up being body color in the fender wells and overspray underneath with black brushed along the bottom of the rockers. Don’t think they applied color to the pan like they would the rest of the car.
