Oh wow. The non-S 2.4 is ripe for upgrades due to the (relatively) lazy T and E cams, and the low compression pistons. Do a search - there's lots of threads out there detailing my engine upgrades, as well as Tim Walsh's, Tyson Schmidt's (RIP), and others. The heart of the modifications in these engines is basically upgrades to the pistons and cams. Good used sets of 2.2T, E, and S pistons are out there, if not super-easy to find.

Check out Wayne's book as well as Bruce Anderson's book - -- then read some old threads here. The potential for a hotrod 2.4 pushing close to 200 very tractable horsepower is enormous. Best part is, you don't have to invest an arm and a leg to get it.
