A used tranny can be fine or have problems. Depends on how many miles it has, how hard it has been used, how well it has been maintained, how carefully Hans in the factory assembled it in the first place, and so on.

Used is a popular option, particularly for the price-conscious. Then again, you seem to have a very sizeable budget--so a rebuilt one would be nice because you'd know exactly what kind of shape it's in.
