Unless there is something wrong with the sensor plate or lever arm...you are heading down the wrong road.

If you have your idle bypass screw all the way closed and had to retard the timing, there is something very wrong.

You may have an internal air leak.

You'll need to get everything back to how it was when you started.

The AAV or AAR may be the cause for excess idle air. I suspect the idle mixture is very rich because someone tried to compensate for the extra air.

You'll need to provide more information, but the above may start you thinking about this on the correct line.
