Sensor plate question for 78 3.0..
I'm having a problem with my 78 3.0 idle after warm up. Checked all vacuum lines and they are all good. I now have the idle completlely closed with the timing retarded so that the idle stays about 1000-1150 RPM after warm up. I removed the air filter and pulled down on the sensor plate and the idle came down which makes me think that if I could adjust the sensor plate(which I tried to do from in the air box but nothing) that I could open the idle adjustment screw and advance the timing. Should I continue with this thinking and remove the intake air boot and try to center the plate and make an adjustment or could I do a fuel adjustment and richen to lower the idle?

Unless there is something wrong with the sensor plate or lever arm...you are heading down the wrong road.
If you have your idle bypass screw all the way closed and had to retard the timing, there is something very wrong. You may have an internal air leak. You'll need to get everything back to how it was when you started. The AAV or AAR may be the cause for excess idle air. I suspect the idle mixture is very rich because someone tried to compensate for the extra air. You'll need to provide more information, but the above may start you thinking about this on the correct line. (I've been to LakeLand! A good buddy from FSU grew up there...Ken Walsh? His parents own a Travel agency there) |

Souk thanks for the help. I can put everything back without any problem. I know how to check the AAR but not sure how to check the AAV. What other info would you need? Don't know Ken. Grew up in Tampa and then moved to Lakeland..

I had the same problem once. I pulled the big hose on the aar and put some tape on both ends. The idle dropped to the correct rpm so I found the problem. However the engine needs to be warm first, otherwise plugging the aar will stall it out.
