Does the tach move when it turns over?
Sounds like speed/reference sensors.

If the brake lights quit, I'd check the switch, it's down by the pedal.

A possible reason for the missing when on the brake, is they are vacuum-boosted. If the car is not running right, it can get a little rough when you introduce a big vacuum leak, aka, step on the brakes.

In my old subaru, if you hit the brakes hard 3 times in a row while it was idling, it would stall, but then again, it was a POS too.
