odometer repair/fix

anyone else been thru this maze? my odo stopped working, and i eventually got around to taking the speedo out, with a view to replacing the red drive gear. turns out that the little gear just moved out of alignment, and so i moved it back into mesh, and called it a day ! it went again, and so a closer look was called for. i noticed that there is quite a lot of free movement, so i made up an aluminum clip, that would eleminate the play. one week later, and no odo again!! i guess i took out all the play, and it started to bind, and after observing the unit in operation, it appears that you must leave about 1 mm total play, to allow the unit to "move" as the whole shebungle moves, as the numbers rotate in the enclosure. well, i hope thats it this time! i half expected the gear to be worn, but it actually looks in great shape.
in retrospect, it looks like the assembly was made like this, so that if any binding, or other problem occurs, the gear will"move over" to the side, and avoid stripping. fail safe mode. i think after all these years, the little bushing, and the gear, are not as tight a fit on the driving shaft, and thats why it moves over after a short time.
bob.
