odometer repair/fix
anyone else been thru this maze? my odo stopped working, and i eventually got around to taking the speedo out, with a view to replacing the red drive gear. turns out that the little gear just moved out of alignment, and so i moved it back into mesh, and called it a day ! it went again, and so a closer look was called for. i noticed that there is quite a lot of free movement, so i made up an aluminum clip, that would eleminate the play. one week later, and no odo again!! i guess i took out all the play, and it started to bind, and after observing the unit in operation, it appears that you must leave about 1 mm total play, to allow the unit to "move" as the whole shebungle moves, as the numbers rotate in the enclosure. well, i hope thats it this time! i half expected the gear to be worn, but it actually looks in great shape.
in retrospect, it looks like the assembly was made like this, so that if any binding, or other problem occurs, the gear will"move over" to the side, and avoid stripping. fail safe mode. i think after all these years, the little bushing, and the gear, are not as tight a fit on the driving shaft, and thats why it moves over after a short time. bob.

actually, now i come to think of it, there is an other possibility. at the little gear side, there is an aperture, that the gear would slide into. its possible that i'm missing some kind of plastic spacer?? anyway, what i have done basically does the same thing. i just dont want to spend another evening taking it all apart again!

hi FR. i hear what you are saying, and everything is tight on the shaft. the problem is that there is way too much play, because of the distance between the bearings/spacers. the shaft that the red gear is attached to, can actually move about 1/4 inch, allowing the gear to close up to the main wall. i need to make a small plastic spacer, that will take up the gap between the gear and the wall, but allowing about 1mm of play, as the whole assembly "rocks" as it turns. i have jury-rigged such a spacer, and it seems to be doing the job. i will make the proper one, and have it ready, should my rough and ready one fail !
thanks for input! regards, bob.

well, i just used a flat tip screwdriver, and "eased" the edges up enough, all the way around so that i could pop it off. when you have made your repair, push it back on, and gently fold the edges over again.
nice and gentle. bob.
