I am puzzled. My '88 Carrera coupe has 7.5" and 8.5" BBS wheels with 205/55 and 225/50 tires. This is the size the p/o had on the car, and I replaced them with the same size. It is also the size recommended for this rim width by Bruce Anderson ("Performance Handbook," p. 214). If 245s will fit the rear, and maybe 225s on the front, why would anyone use a smaller width? Am I giving myself less road holding ability than I could have with a wider tire?
On the same theme, my tires are Dunlop SP5000s, which I bought bec they are all weather, and winter was approaching when I replaced the old tires. Would I have noticeably better handling with a summer high performance tire, like SP9000s? I wonder the same thing about my A6 Quattro: how much better would it handle with high speed summer tires, instead of the all weather (H rated) tire I have been using, and need for winter?
