Question Tires Sizes

What size tires will fit on a stock 86 Carrera with 7" and 8" rims. I've just upgraded from the 6/7" rims and need some idea of what sized track tires to run without rubbing. Thanks.

205 front 245 rear "SHOULD" be OK. 225 rubbed in the front on the inner wheel well on my original 6" rims. 215 was unavailable so I had to go to 205 in AOO8's. The back was 245 on 8" rims. My car is an 89 that has been lowered. The tires that came on my car when purchased were 205 and 225. Sorry, couldn't remeber the aspect ratio's. I think they were 55 and 50?

Seems a shame to go to the trouble of changing both wheels only to increase the width of the rears?
I thought I had heard of people fitting 225's to the front 7's?
would be interested as i am going down the same path!.
What tires are you going for Britt, and how much track time are you intending vs street

Many drivers keep the same 205's on the front and move from a 6 to 7" rim. It keeps the sidewall more straight and gives increased stiffness.`

225x55x7x16 Front 245x45x8x16 Rear. Fuchs w/ SO2's lowered, no rub no roll.88 coupe. The rears don't even fill in the well. Perhaps the SO2's run a little small.

Question

I am puzzled. My '88 Carrera coupe has 7.5" and 8.5" BBS wheels with 205/55 and 225/50 tires. This is the size the p/o had on the car, and I replaced them with the same size. It is also the size recommended for this rim width by Bruce Anderson ("Performance Handbook," p. 214). If 245s will fit the rear, and maybe 225s on the front, why would anyone use a smaller width? Am I giving myself less road holding ability than I could have with a wider tire?
On the same theme, my tires are Dunlop SP5000s, which I bought bec they are all weather, and winter was approaching when I replaced the old tires. Would I have noticeably better handling with a summer high performance tire, like SP9000s? I wonder the same thing about my A6 Quattro: how much better would it handle with high speed summer tires, instead of the all weather (H rated) tire I have been using, and need for winter?
