Hi Alan,
First some data points:
-The 964 cams journals are the same size as the 1978 on ones. Some people use actual 964 cams and cut off the pump drive.
- The end of the cam fittings changed from the big nut to bolt style in 1981 I believe. You could confirm this by looking up the cam fittings here on Pelican.

.. and then some unsolicited suggestions:
I'd sell your 964 grind Andial cams and get the correct sized ones rather than change the rest of the motor so you could use them.

Just my opinion but if I had a motor with your specs I'd run a cam that better suited it. The 964 cam is mild because the shared plenum intake and Motronic engine management system couldn't handle a "happier" cam. I think emmisions compliance had something to do with it too.
