I don't recall any studs on the mufflers... I always used nuts and bolts on the one stock and one stock-ish muffler. Where the muffler bolts onto the heat exchangers, that is, on a 70-74 914 specifically.
Sounds like you're talking about the exhaust studs, the ones that thread into the cylinder head. Or something I'm not at all familiar with...
Frankly, I haven't dealt with the Beetle boot. I wouldn't mind knowing how close it is to the actual part, but I don't have a 1.8 any more to compare, and I don't have the spare $$$ floating around to buy the Bug boot either. I would guess that it might be the wrong diameter, and have the wrong curves. But that's just a guess.
