It's been quite a while since my last auto insurance settlement, but you may benefit from something a friendly adjuster told me. After all the negotiation is over and the value of the car has been agreed to, then request compensation for sales tax. I actually had an agent thrusting a check at me, but I kept my hands in my pockets and requested the sales tax. He gave me the stink eye, but came back with a check that was 6% higher. Maybe a California thing, but worth a try.
