I was just visiting the 'hot tank' thread and recall Bruce Anderson or Alan Caldwell, or somebody in Up-Fixin' discuss this. There is a clear varnish on Carrera motors, and it is on mine. Some has flaked off. Anyway, after cleaning, the case should be protected against corrosion. There is little hope for the ugly (sorry folks) magnesium cases, but your aluminum case could stay looking shiny for quite a while. The product mentioned by those experts in Up-Fixin' is a Wurth product. If I were you, I'd paint a little of this stuff on the case and a few other clean aluminum parts just before the engine goes back in the car.
I have heard lots of good things about Wurth products, but have no idea where they can be purchased. I am told there are Wurth trucks, but I have not noticed any.
