Post Rebuild pics &stuff (last thread)

Ok, instead of posting new threads everytime I do something I am going to try to just add on to this one. SOund good? Ok then, well here is a picture of what I did tonight.
As I tried to dry assemble my case I noticed that the pin or stud that goes on one side of the case to align the nose bearing with the oil passages (kinda important) was missing. Whoops...well I emailed John Walker and he said: go find a old drill bit that fits, cut it off and pop 'er in there. So that's ecactly what i did. I found that it was a tight fit in the case (gently tapped on it with a mallet) and slightly loose on the nose bearing. A perfect fit if I don't say so myself!

Well here's a pic:

moe to come...keep checking back to this thread every once and a while because I'll be adding other stuff to it as I move along.

No, it's not a pair of chop sticks...
it's a specifically designed highly modified extreemely expensive piece of cardboard...
And it works quite well.

Note the masking tape to keep particles from getting in to places I don't want them to be.

This is great Leland! Although I've never thought of engine building as a spectator sport, I'll be watching / waiting for the next round. Hopefully it won't be so "foreign" when the time comes to do mine.

On a side note, have you ever done this before? (domestic or p-car?)

Thanks Leland! This is great, I always enjoy watching other peoples projects. Good way to get ideas and learn.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Yeah, thanks Leland. I'm watching.

I was just visiting the 'hot tank' thread and recall Bruce Anderson or Alan Caldwell, or somebody in Up-Fixin' discuss this. There is a clear varnish on Carrera motors, and it is on mine. Some has flaked off. Anyway, after cleaning, the case should be protected against corrosion. There is little hope for the ugly (sorry folks) magnesium cases, but your aluminum case could stay looking shiny for quite a while. The product mentioned by those experts in Up-Fixin' is a Wurth product. If I were you, I'd paint a little of this stuff on the case and a few other clean aluminum parts just before the engine goes back in the car.

I have heard lots of good things about Wurth products, but have no idea where they can be purchased. I am told there are Wurth trucks, but I have not noticed any.

For Wurth info go to

http://www.wurthusa.com/en/start.html

I live on the west coast of Florida and ordered from their Orlando warehouse. In my case they deliver by truck and the shipping fee was $4 no matter how much I ordered. Hell of a deal!

Leland - thanks for taking the timne to post the pics - it's a free education and I have a feeling that one day I may be doing the same thing. I'd just love to be there the day it is complete and you fire it up for the first time. It would be a good excuse for a party.

I like the drill bit for dowel pin idea. You didn't use a $1500 USAF drill bit, did you?

Um,... Air Force drill bit?... oh no.....never...

And you all are very welcome. I'm doing this for reasons that are two fold. One I do want to share my experiences with everyone and post as much info as i can dish out. And two, if I make some boneheaded mistake...I'm hopeing someone will catch it.

Anyway, keep checking back to this thread as I will be posting updates.

Rustbucket, nope...this is my first baby.

And superman,..I'll check into this Wurth compound annd let you know what I find.
