If you have, or can get a Haynes manual, you may find some answers there in the transmission section, specifically on p. 96 of my '88 edition Haynes. If you take off the guide fork plate ... two nuts, directly accross from the drain plug, after draining the gear oil ... you may be able to see if there is anything amiss with the shift rod.

Remember that motions of the shift rod are mirror images of the shifter motion ... 1st gear is engaged by rotating the shift rod to maximum counterclockwise travel, and pulling out on the shift rod!
