I don't know anything about how to do xbox live, but we've got 2 free trials with some games we bought, and we've got broadband internet, so I'm sure we could make it work...my only concern is the 360 is downstairs and the computer is upstairs (tho I prolly could use my new laptop)

You have two options with the Xbox Live. You can run an ethernet cable all the way to the console or, if you have a wireless network in your house, you can purchase a wireless adapter for the 360 for $99. Ours is <6 feet from the router so we use a cabled setup but either way will work.
