There is a kit that can be bought to convert a bus trans to fit a beetle. It has something to do with nose cone. It adapts the nose cone to use beetle shift linkage. That would be a good way to go a little stronger on the inside and the outside(axels). However if your your bug is pre-69 the bus trans is the same. The later buses with the typeIV motor were IRS. Therefore you would need to put an IRS pan under your pre-69 body.
