911 tranny, 914 bengine in a bug
I'm trying to figure out how I'd put a 914 engine with 911 tranny into my bug.
does anyone know how I'd do this? I know its been done, but I need to know how to do it, what year of tranny is needed etc (i already have the engine) VB |

I am no expert at this but I am also considering putting a 914 engine in my bug. I don't think the 911 tranny is a good choice. The stock tranny is better I believe. The master at this I believe is Joe Cali...check out his webpage at http://home.att.net/~NEXTGEN/

This is done regularly in "SuperCup" beetles.
I've found a few web pages here and there (mostly all european as that is were they race them)[http://www.flashelectronique.be/Vwcup/ for one]. 200Hp is the norm and a supercup beetle has outperformed a late 80's 911 RS in all measurements except top speed because of the lack of stability from crappy aerodynamics. You can't beat the extreme low weight of the Beetle with that kind of traction and power. |

Friggs is right the 911 trans is not suitable for this conversion. Your money would be better spent on a 'beefy' VW trans. The conversions I've seen have had no problem with the power output of a type IV motor. The only thing I do recommend if you go to a stock beetle trans is to get 3rd and 4th (or is it just 4th?) gears welded. They are just pressed onto the shaft and can be spun if you have to much power. While your at it you could put longer gears in at the same time, and a super diff. and a .... etc. and still come out costing alot less than a 911 trans conversion.

The 2.0L 914/ Bettle conversion I saw had bus halfshalfs and I think a 67? bus tranny. The owner wasn't that knowledgable (and at the time I had no interest in foreign cars) maybe he meant bus C-V joint's, but he did know that the 914 motor kept breaking something untill he used the bus components.
If you need convertion mounts for the motor check out FATS performance, I'm also seen complete kits for sale in the back of the air-cooled Bettle magazines. |

There is a kit that can be bought to convert a bus trans to fit a beetle. It has something to do with nose cone. It adapts the nose cone to use beetle shift linkage. That would be a good way to go a little stronger on the inside and the outside(axels). However if your your bug is pre-69 the bus trans is the same. The later buses with the typeIV motor were IRS. Therefore you would need to put an IRS pan under your pre-69 body.
