Update...

The sensors are where they should be, it's just tough to see them. I got them out with little fuss (relative to some other problems...) by laying under the car and reaching up on top and working on them.

We also removed two ground points on the case. We thought that was it.

Next step was getting the clutch fork lever pin out. We screwed in the 8mm bolt and started prying and it came out fairly easy with about 5 minutes effort, at least until the end. The thing was almost out but wouldn't budge at the end. Was stuck on something inside (?). Loose, could be spun or shook, but caught somehow. Didn't expect this. Finally my dad yanked it out by beating vice grips with a mallet.

Then we proceeded to wrestle with the four big bolts holding the clutch housing on.

With much circus effort for the two top ones we got them all off.

We figured the clutch housing would come free. WRONG> it was gummed up on something on the drivers side. Turns out the cables going to the starter had another clamp on it and was bolted to the housing. This was a bear and I couldn't get a wrench or socket on in (10mm) to save my life. Finally greased the cables and could slide it down and work on it with more room. Again, didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the FSM, clarks, etc. I wonder if it's a 16V thing.

I wonder how many more "16V things" we'll encounter. More tomorrow. Need to go drink a Hacker-Pschorr Munich Helles. Will report back again tomorrow in case anyone out there is interested in our saga.
