87 944S Speed and reference sensors?

Working on a clutch job right now. We are having trouble even locating the speed and reference sensors. Have the TT back and the tranny out, just need some help as the 16V doesn't have the sensors where we'd expect based on the FSM, Clarks, etc. which only discuss the 8V.

Any advice?

Have a look at the edge of your flywheel. I think the S is like the S2 in that it uses a 60-2 tooth setup on the flywheel and only has one sensor. It will look like 58 little bumps and one flat spot where two bumps would be. This is unlike the 8v cars that read only one stud from the edge of the flywheel and also use the ring gear.

I'm not sure on this but my FSM shows a "Hall Generator" that is located between the power steering reservoir and the back of the cam gear cover. That sensor connection looks a lot like the Speed and Reference sensors on the 8V cars. The diagram is located on page 03-27 of V1a in the FSM.

Found them. Looks like the intake hose may need to come out...

WOw, thanks for the quick replies. We found one maybe two sensors up top that need to come out of the bell housing, almost under the intake manifold feed hose. They flywheel does indeed have the teeth like the S2. Will post more later... Thanks again!

Update...

The sensors are where they should be, it's just tough to see them. I got them out with little fuss (relative to some other problems...) by laying under the car and reaching up on top and working on them.

We also removed two ground points on the case. We thought that was it.

Next step was getting the clutch fork lever pin out. We screwed in the 8mm bolt and started prying and it came out fairly easy with about 5 minutes effort, at least until the end. The thing was almost out but wouldn't budge at the end. Was stuck on something inside (?). Loose, could be spun or shook, but caught somehow. Didn't expect this. Finally my dad yanked it out by beating vice grips with a mallet.

Then we proceeded to wrestle with the four big bolts holding the clutch housing on.

With much circus effort for the two top ones we got them all off.

We figured the clutch housing would come free. WRONG> it was gummed up on something on the drivers side. Turns out the cables going to the starter had another clamp on it and was bolted to the housing. This was a bear and I couldn't get a wrench or socket on in (10mm) to save my life. Finally greased the cables and could slide it down and work on it with more room. Again, didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the FSM, clarks, etc. I wonder if it's a 16V thing.

I wonder how many more "16V things" we'll encounter. More tomorrow. Need to go drink a Hacker-Pschorr Munich Helles. Will report back again tomorrow in case anyone out there is interested in our saga.
