Tony is correct, but a good rule of thumb is that the engine number should be a few higher than the chassis number (something like 50-200 higher depending on the year).

If it's much different (over 1000, 1500) then a transplant is very likely...and obviously, the years and models have to match.

It would be exceedingly rare to find a transplanted engine that was within 50 or 100 of the chassis it was going into, unless someone put piles of time and money into forcing that to happen.

Edit: And after reading your post more closely, are you asking if the engine/tranny match the body, or if the tranny matches the engine?
